About Oxford

Interactive Map
An interactive map of Oxford for new students and visitors.

Oxford is a relatively small city with easy access to the countryside, and London is only an hour and a half away on the bus or train. The university is spread throughout the whole city but everywhere is no further than fifteen minutes away by bicycle. A bike is a useful investment as Oxford is very flat and cycle-friendly. There are many cycle shops marked on the map to the left, as well as museums, art galleries, and parks. Oxford is also very international-friendly, as it is often visited by people from all over the world, and the postgraduate community at the university is especially mixed. You are very likely to find other people from your country if you are coming from abroad!

If you have not already, you will soon be receiving a packet from the College Office, explaining everything you need to know for your matriculation.

Matriculation will be explained fully when you arrive. Essentially you should arrive at least one week before term begins (see the fresher’s week program in ‘activities, events and news’ on this site), and all will be explained. It is an impressive ceremony that takes place in the Sheldonian Theatre and formally admits you into Oxford. You will need sub-fusc (gown, mortar board etc) which either Shephard and Woodward or Ede and Ravenscroft Oxford clothiers can explain to you and help you order. You can also usually pick up the items you need second-hand before term begins.
